POSTWAR AND MODERN ART AUCTIONS

Modern and contemporary art is the key part of the global and polish art market. 2015 was a crucial year in this respect as auction sales of post-war art in Poland reached almost 46 million zlotys. DESA Unicum had 67% market share in this sector and most of the record-high sales belong to DESA Unicum as well. Therefore if you are looking for a place to sell contemporary art, head to DESA Unicum.

Art collectors are interested in works of art of the acclaimed Polish avant garde artists of the second half of the 20th century. We are looking for distinctive Polish and foreign contemporary pieces of art.

19th CENTURY AND MODERN ART AUCTIONS

For years the artists of École de Paris from the beginning of 20th Century such as Zygmunt Menkes, Eugene Zak, Mela Mutter and Moise Kisling have been popular among collectors. Often we are not aware of high value of the painting that has been hanging for years on the wall at one's family home. We encourage you to let our experts evaluate and sell your items.

We are looking for the paintings created at the turn of the nineteenth and twentieth century and in the interwar period. Particularly the works of renowed Polish painters.

AUCTIONS OF WORKS ON PAPER

Many artists consider paper as a beginning of their artwork: a space for explorations and experiments. On the other hand painters such as Leon Wyczolkowski, Stanislaw Wyspianski, Andrzej Wroblewski or Jerzy Nowosielski, considered paper as their primary medium to work with. At these auctions – subdivided into pre-war, modern and contemporary sections – collectors are searching for their favourite artists.

Many painters have created their most remarkable paintings on paper. The auctions of works on paper are often the best opportinity for to expand the collection.

AUCTIONS OF SCULPTURE

We are the only auction house in Poland that organises a series of auctions of 19th Century, modern and contemporary sculpture. The most appreciated are the works of great Polish sculptors, such as Alina Szapocznikow or Igor Mitoraj. Wooden figurines of unknown artists of the School of Zakopane or sacral figures are also very popular.

We are searching for Polish art deco sculptires, e.g. those that belong to the school of zakopane, that is, the famous scool known for it's original sculpture and decoration.

Freguently asked questions

What can I sell at an auction at DESA Unicum?
We are interested in paintings, sculptures, jewellery, clocks, craftwork, porcelain, silverware, posters, drawings, graphics, photographs and other valuable and unique items which art collectors might be interested in.
What is the cost of valuation?
In contrast to other auction houses, valuations at DESA Unicum are free of charge, if our experts have determined that the item is appropriate to appear on auction. In case you do not wish to sell your object, the cost of valuation will be agreed upon individually.
How long does it take to prepare valuation and authentication?
You will receive our response within 48 hours. The whole process can last up to two weeks. During the time when the item undergoes the evaluation, it is safely stored and insured . The insurance fee is specified on the receipt. In special cases, the time of evaluation may be longer.
What is a Seller’s commission?
Seller’s commission starts at 15%. It depends on the value of the item and the agreed terms and conditions of permanent cooperation. The commission includes VAT, so that you do not have to contact your local tax office for that matter.
What is a Contract of Consignment?
It is a document that specifies the terms and conditions of sales. Signing the contract is necessary for the item to be qualified for auction at a specified starting price.
Will I be paid more if my item is sold at the price higher than the starting price?
Yes. Although we cannot guarantee that your item is sold at a higher price, we take every effort to achieve it. Our highest sales turnover among all auction houses in Poland accounts for it.
Will you help me sell my item if it is not sold at the auction?
If it happens, we will try our best to find a buyer interested in your item. Your item may also appear at another auction. We offer sales of artworks directly and online. We maintain relationships with the greatest number of art collectors in Poland.
Does DESA Unicum buy artworks for cash?
In some cases, we may recommend a trustworthy art investment fund that will buy your artwork for cash. Please contact our Customer Service Office for this matter. However for best results we recommend to sell items at auctions.
I think I have a valuable but damaged item. Can it still be featured on an auction?
Yes, it can. We provide assistance when it comes to conservation, cleaning and replacing casings and frames. It is important to us that the lot is in the best possible condition. You will pay all fees after your item has been sold or when you collect it from us. We do not charge advance payments, and we carefully discuss every element of improving the condition of the item with its owner. We aim at achieving the best possible result. Thus, when we recommend carrying out conservation works or replacing the frame, we strongly encourage you to use our assistance and expertise.
How will you promote my item?
We plan every auction in advance and strive to attract as many potential buyers as possible. Information concerning our auctions is available in newspapers, on TV, radio and online. Every auction is preceded by an exhibition organised at one of our galleries. Promoting our auctions among art collectors and your success are our priorities. For every auction we prepare an auction catalogue. Such catalogues are sent to several thousands of our clients and are also available online or at Empik newsagent's. Therefore, our offer reaches a wide range of customers, leading to higher sales during the auction.
How often are auctions organised and when will I receive the money for the item sold?
In February - June, September-December auctions take place twice a week. We are proud to have organised the largest number of auctions in Poland – every year we prepare about 60 auctions, while the average for other Polish auction houses is up to 12. With such a great number of auctions it is very likely that your item will be sold. Should this not happen, for instance, in September, the item may be bid on at the next auction. In just 3 weeks following the auction you will receive payment for the sold lot.
